BEST S/S 2020 FABRICS: A season all in lightness

An overview of the selections made by international fashion brands at the February 19 Première Vision Paris show outlines the major fabric trends for spring summer 2020.

In all sectors combined, the season emphasises lightness as a fundamental prerequisite for textiles.

Discover here a selection of the Best fabrics from the Première Vision Marketplace for your SS 2020 collections.

Subtle gleam

More than shine, it's lightness that's winning over international buyers this season. And where shine is found, it's subtle. Fabrics embracing transparency - organza, sheer silks with barely visible weaves, printed mousseline - boast iridescent surfaces. Gleaming aspects with almost wet effects are just right for little sleeved items, especially jackets and blouses.

Tracing layers and transparency

As fine as tissue paper, fabrics are assembled like layers to better play on appearances, aided by colours, cut-yarns, assemblies, embroidery, the addition of a Lurex yarn or plays on motifs. These cutting-edge and creative techniques presaging a new take on transparency are eagerly sought-after by buyers.

Ultra-light knits

This lightness is also expressed in knits. Knits of an extreme fineness, with © Cupro or © Lyocell blends, openworked or barely ribbed, unimaginably supple for second-skin effects with maximum comfort. Fabrics that can be well imagined for tops, tee shirts, dresses...

Featherweights for menswear

Weights are feather-light for menswear too. Casual fabrics are lightened to the extreme. And most notably, in casualwear, lightness means suppleness. While cotton remains key, it is less crispy. Thanks to finishings and washings, © Lyocell and viscose blends contribute to achieving the suppleness so appreciated by buyers.

Transparent coatings

The ever-narrowing frontier between sportswear and city wear is once again confirmed, as evidenced by buyers' choices for lightness.

Technical and nobler fabrics are favoured. City-wear fabrics - checks, houndstooths, and jacquards - grow iridescent, and feature light transparent coatings that fulfil both a high-performance (water-resistance, anti-perspiration) and aesthetic function -  certain to infuse new life into tailored items.

Lightweight, high-performant and also silent (because they aren't crispy) fabrics - here too buyers look for suppleness.

Infinitesimal coatings, feather weights, creative and innovative techniques- these are the fabric ingredients favoured for a S/S 2020 season promising to be light and supple.
