Green is the new blue! Energy-saving processes

 

The last Denim Première Vision show in Milan confirms that sustainability is definitely a priority for the denim weavers.

 

And to keep up with one of denim's major trends, we wanted to take a deep dive into the new know-hows suppliers are using to enhance the sustainability of their processes.

 

 

Mainly, these companies target energy savings, the use of new organic yarns and/or fibres, reduced chemical products, and even cradle-to-cradle processes.

 

This article focuses in particular on energy-saving processes.

 

Denim has traditionally been known to be very greedy energy-wise, so suppliers are making huge efforts to reduce their consumption, whether in terms of water, electricity, steam, etc.

 

 

Let’s take a look at some of the different practices being employed by just a few of the companies who are leading the way, and which you can find on the Marketplace.

 

 

Horizon by Naveena

 

 

 

 

One example is Naveena, which is working to minimize the environmental impact of its operations by using natural resources as efficiently as possible.

 

One of the company's major successes is called Horizon, which Naveena calls “the most sustainable denim fabric ever”.

 

Made from BCI cotton, Horizon fabrics combine Naveena’s existing Ecolean + Aqualter dyeing processes together with the H2NO finishing process - a unique combination of three different processing methods.  (Ecolean, an innovative dyeing process designed in collaboration with DyStar, significantly reduces the effluent output while also saving energy, water and time.)

 

Consuming 81% less water, 40% less energy and 50% less steam than denim produced by conventional methods, HORIZON improves the EIM score by 40%.

 

 

Kilim

 

 

 

 

Kilim denim is also one of the big energy-savers.  Since 2015, the company has decreased its use of electricity by 40%, steam by 66%, fuel by 70% and water by 65%. The company contributes to the health, transportation and social life of the Yeni Kadın Köyü village, where most of its employees live, by providing financial aid. And fabrics employing yarns made from a plastic-waste collection campaign, initiated as part of a social sustainability project, are coming soon.

 

 

Berto

 

 

 

 

 

As part of its environmental strategy, Berto Industria Tessile saves energy and recovers the surplus, treats their industrial waste, and makes sure to leave a low environmental impact. The company pays great attention to energy recovery, and conducts constant research into ecological materials, natural processes and water recovery.

Advance Denim

 

 

 

 

 

 

At a company level, energy consumption has been reduced by 31% per yard of production since 2013, with a 7.8% reduction on average from 2013 to 2017. What's more, water consumption has been reduced by 34% from 2013 to 2017. The use of energy - efficient machine replacements and equipment upgrades have significantly reduced the company's energy consumption and improved their carbon footprint.

 

 

Prosperity Textile

 

 

 

 

 

The company has been working hard on more sustainable indigo dyeing technologies, a reducing their use of water and chemicals, and cutting CO2 emissions. In July 2016, the company successfully installed and connected a 218 KW solar project on the rooftop of their warehouse to the grid, and installed a sewage treatment plant able to process 3,500 tons/day to process waste water after dyeing and finishing.

 

The washing factory by Rajby

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rajby regularly audits their energy use at their washing factory, using the results to enact all possible measures to reduce their consumption. They use the latest sustainability tools to gauge their performance through international platforms called the HIGG index – Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) and Business Environmental Performance Initiatives (BEPI). Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) have also been installed to minimize soil and water contamination.
