“Brewed Protein™” is a new class of protein materials manufactured through Spiberʼs in-house proprietary fermentation (brewing) process. Brewed Protein polymers are produced primarily from plant-derived feedstocks and do not rely on animal-based resources, and can be processed into fibers, resin, films, and other types of materials. Spiber’s polymer production plant in Thailand is expected to start operations from Q1 2022, followed by a plant in the U.S. from 2023 at the earliest.

Production process of Brewed Protein materials
1. Observe, analyze, and build database of natural DNA
2. Design and synthesize DNA that encodes desired protein polymers
3. Introduce synthetic DNA into specially designed, highly productive microorganisms
4. Feed microorganisms with sugars to produce polymers through fermentation process
5. Separate polymers from fermentation residue
6. Spin Brewed Protein polymers into fibers and process into various types of yarn/fabric

*Biodegradation [See Ref. 1,2]
・Unfinished Brewed Protein fibers demonstrate approximately 70% biodegradation after 30 days of testing in marine environment conditions in accordance with ASTM D6691 using OxiTop system (>70% of the carbon content of the fibers is broken down into CO2 by microbial action).
・Within 6 months of testing in natural soil field conditions, undyed Brewed Protein knitted fabrics demonstrated complete degradation (similar to that of cotton fabrics), whereas dyed Brewed Protein knitted fabrics showed partial disintegration, suggesting that more time is required for them to achieve complete degradation.

▼Bonsucro Certification in Thailand
・Spiber is a member of Bonsucro, a global sugarcane platform, and will use locally harvested Bonsucro certified sugar at its production facility in Thailand.
・Bonsucro certification ensures more traceability and less negative environmental/ social impact compared to standard (non-certified) sugar.

▼Cover Cropping in the U.S.
・Corn to be used for Brewed Protein polymer production in the U.S. will be procured from farmers who implement regenerative farming practices using cover crops.
・Cover cropping, when compared to conventional industrial farming methods, reduces the risk of water pollution caused by outflow of fertilizers and also reduces greenhouse gas emissions through carbon storage.

*Reduced Carbon Footprint [See Ref. 3]
・Brewed Protein materials have a significantly smaller carbon footprint compared to conventional animal-based protein fibers such as cashmere and wool.
・Ruminants such as goats and sheep which produce animal fibers (such as cashmere and wool) emit large amounts of methane gas while rearing.
