AW 20-21 UPDATING REPORT: Boosting the volume

08/12/2019

A balanced silhouette with bold, generous volumes and cuts!

The Updating survey conducted in October-November 2019 canvassed selected international buyers to highlight the indispensable products to inject into your autumn-winter 2020 - 2021 collections now.

The autumn winter 20-21 silhouette is built around bold, generous volumes. It's a look that's full and rounded, with outerwear deliberately evoking cosy, maximum-comfort cocoons.

Balance is assured thanks to pants and dresses that seek a contrasting fluidity, enhanced by fabrics that are both softened and structuring.

This is a fashion direction for new looks playing on the border between city and casual wear.

Outerwear

In all the various markets, outerwear reflects this quest for volume that buyers are on the lookout for.

In city wear, coats are soft and enveloping. You can easily imagine them being worked in beautiful natural materials such as wool-cashmere blends that can be brushed or hairy, or a compact virgin wool.

In casual wear, the down jacket is super puffy this season, thanks in particular to the use of new down-proof materials. Weavers have made a real effort in terms of eco-responsibility in these materials, particularly at Duksung.

For sports items, international buyers are betting on big foldable parkas worked in nylons, which also combine ever more imaginative designs with eco-responsible performance, as evidenced by Ludia's recycled polyester ripstop. For more fashionable items, the survey shows that buyers are hungry for plump and slightly regressive materials such as natural or artificial shearlings.

Tops

In knits, volumes are both large and structured.

Sweaters are airy, with openworked knits and puffy yarns for foamy, round and enveloping effects.

The boundary between sportswear and citywear continues to blur, thanks in particular to new cut-sewn products and refined, luxurious fleeces.

In tops, the focus is on the sleeve with, in tailored items, sleeves that are constructed, and given structure by shoulder pads. For casual pieces, the vote goes to puffy, supple, balloon and leg-of-mutton sleeves.

Bottoms

Pants, skirts and other bottom items flaunt more fullness thanks to the elaboration of structures and pleating on malleable and textured fabrics with marked diagonals. Also opted for were hesitantly flared pant hemlines, or boldly wide culottes in soft velvets and very wide-rib cords. The survey also highlights workwear details on utility-style pants in softened cottons and denims, washed without being washed out.
